Adding a Zipper to a Handbag
Okay, I am going to bite the bullet and with the help of my sister, Grace, I am going to put a zipper in a purse. She sent me pictures of how to put in a zipper when making a bag. Posting them here for reference and in case anyone else needs help.
Grace’s hint: Use a zipper that comes apart and can be put back together; a separating zipper.
Fold fabric in on all sides 1/2″.

You can put interfacing in if desired. Fold fabric in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Press.

Open up fabric and lay it on one side of the back of the zipper and sew with a basting stitch. Don’t sew too close to the teeth. Fold fabric over and sew with a regular stitch on the top side (top side of zipper).

Lay the zipper face down and align the zipper flap in center of bag. Baste. Repeat for other zipper side.

Proceed putting the bag together according to your pattern.

Honey, this is absolutely wonderful, but the tutorial is so lost on me — a woman who may never pick up a needle again in her life. Well, I possibly will sew a patch on something some day, but that’ll probably be the extent of my sewing
But I sure do appreciate your artistry.
What an amazing world full of such creative people we live in.

Karen, I never thought sewing a bag is such a easy thing and thanks for enticing me to try it on my own. Can you please let me know how many hours or minutes you actually took to finish this super cool craft? Do you have any specific fabric suggestions like the zippers??
Regards,
Mack
And I appreciate how you get up in front of people and sing your heart out!
It takes me about an hour to cut out a purse and then another 4 hours to sew one together.
5 hours sounds appropriate.. and btw your suggestions for the fabric ??? Like something easy to handle for the beginners.

I would not use Batiks like used in these photos. It is a silky fabric and harder to handle. I’d start out with a nice cotton fabric.
Looks easy enough…I may just have to try it.

Thanks for the suggestion karen. Cotton fabric would be easier for me to avail as well as practice. Will definitely keep you posted on the outcome. Thanks again for really enticing me to crafts
